This weekend I dusted off my HP OEM Microsoft WinXP Home Prem SP2 disc and installed on my p6787c without a problem. The install showed as activated and displayed an OEM prod id. This disc came with a HP laptop circa 2004.
Since then, I have install it multiple times on a number of different HP/Compaq machines all running that copy at the same time. Your copy of XP Pro should work without a problem but something is screwing it up. I would look in the OOBEinfo.ini file, the Unattend.txt file and/or the Winnt.sif file on the CD for the product key and make sure one exists.
