The system thought about it for a minute then told me “I can’t find a driver for the device”. Off I went to the hp website, looking for a driver, only to find that the latest driver for this scanner is for windows xp.

Forget about it: i tinkered a little with what I had and came up with a perfectly working solution. That’s what you get growing up with LEGO! So, boys and girls, here is my guide to install the hp scanjet 3400c on win7! UPDATE: as stated in the comments, this workaround will only work on 32-bit Installations. There is no 64-bit version of the driver I know of, so this will not work with Windows 7 64-bit versions. What you’ll need: – CAVEAT: I’m in Italy so the link sends you to the italian page of the HP site. You may have to do a new search for the driver n your own language.

It’s really a nice file-compressing software that has, so far, opened each and every kind of archive I have thrown at it. Why you may need 7zip will be clear in a moment, but if everything goes as I describe you won’t need it. If you have downloaded the two required softwares, browse to the location where you downloaded the “driver” you got from HP.
I’m using brackets because this executable file is just a package that contains the real thing. If you go ahead and double click on this file, it will check your OS version and tell you a very lame: (Sorry that it is in italian) This happens because executing this file, will extract the drivers, and then try to install them. The installation doesn’t recognize the Operating System and gives you that output. What you want to do is open the “Computer” Folder from the start menu and browse your C: directory. Here you will find a folder called something like: sj652.
If you open this folder you will find all the files required by the driver installation. Scroll down the list of files until you find a setup.exe file. If you don’t see the extension simply select the “Setup” file which has a computer as an icon. Don’t double click on it, just select it and then click on it with the Right Mouse Button. In the context menu, choose “ Properties“, then click on the second tab called “Compatibility”. Here you have to check: “ Run the program in Compatibility mode” and select the mode in the drop down menu. Simply click on “ Windows XP (Service Pack 3)” and then on OK and your work here is done.

IMPORTANT: make sure the scanner is DISCONNECTED from the PC before you install the driver. Since the executable you download from the HP site is just a self-extracting archive, if you prefer not to double-click on it you can extract the driver files using 7zip. To do so: install 7zip (if you don’t have it already) then point your mouse to the sj652it.exe file.

You can now simply select them all, and drag them in an outside folder on your pc (a temporary folder previously created on the Desktop will do).
